My Favorite Things--April 2013

I can't believe it's been a whole month since my first Favorite Things post!  Where did the time go?  With warmer weather, spring break, a spa day, some shopping, and my sister's baby shower, March was definitely good to me.

I spent pretty much my entire spring break in Dallas visiting family and friends.  I got to sell Girl Scout cookies with my nieces, have a few beers with my sis, relax during a much-needed spa day, and spend a sunny afternoon out on the deck for a cookout with dear friends.

There was also a fantastic night attending the Wine Stroll at the Perot Museum as part of the Savor Dallas festival.  Just imagine a bunch of adults after hours at a hands-on children's science museum.  Add in free-flowing wine and champagne, a BattleBots-style robotics face off arena, some dinosaur models, and an earthquake simulator turned to "catastrophic event" and you get...well...this.

Yeah.  That happened.  I actually remember it.  No seriously, guys.

The taxidermied honey badger will vouch for me.  He saw it all go down.

Before all that awesomeness happened, my friend Julie and I did some spa-ing, lunching and shopping.  I picked up an adorable gold anchor twist ring similar to this one and I'm on love with it.  I know anchors are trendy right now, but that isn't really why I like them.  I love that they were one of the first symbols of Christianity and now represent hope.  Seeing that simple anchor on my finger is a constant reminder of God's unending love for me and all that I have to be hopeful about.

Last Friday, I posted about the baby shower my mom, sister, and I threw for my youngest sister.  The first thing I made for the event was this wreath for the front door.  I just loved the way it turned out.  So much so that it's now hanging in the baby's room.  Any interest in a tutorial?

I absolutely adored my college years in Washington, D.C.  (Go American University Eagles!)  Though I was ready to leave when I graduated, I miss D.C. terribly.  I especially long for the place this time of year when the National Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off.  When I was in school, I always made sure to pick a decently warm day when the blossoms were at their peak and take a blanket, some snacks, and my books down to the Tidal Basin, find the best sunny spot with as many pink blossoms as I could find, and spend the day studying trying not to get too distracted by the gorgeous setting.  The best part was when a slight breeze would come through and blow a few blossoms off the tree; it was a magical delicate pink snowfall.  This year, I'm glued to the National Park Service's cherry blossom web cam.  I check it constantly, even though I know the blossoms are likely to be at least a week behind their predicted peak due to the snow a few days ago.  Once they do blossom, I'm not sure how I'm going to get anything accomplished other than staring at my computer screen.

I know Young House Love is definitely nothing new, but I've recently rediscovered the blog.  I've always had it in the back of my mind as a great source of ideas, but I am now a faithful daily reader.  Wait...that's an understatement.  I'm completely and totally obsessed with their creativity, sense of humor (Macklemore Thrift Shop Challenge, anyone?), and love for each other.  Sherry's recent State of the Uterus post was so beautifully and honestly written and when I clicked through to read her daughter's birth story, I was literally in tears.  This blog and the people behind it are 100% excellent.

My mom and I stopped into Old Navy the other day so I could pick up a couple of t-shirts and look at the cute dresses I've been seeing in the tv commercials.  No shocker here, but I left with a whole slew of cute things.  None of which were t-shirts.  I did bring home this super springy yellow mixed-eyelet dress.  I love the bright color, the shorter but not too short length, and and the flirty skirt.  I kind of just want to wear it everywhere.
