A couple of weeks ago, my mom and I hopped on a plane (two, actually) and went to visit my sister, Taylor, in her new hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. She moved there a few months ago for her dream job as a neonatal intensive care nurse at Cook Children's Hospital. I couldn't be prouder of her and the amazing work she does at a truly incredible hospital.
As we tend to do, we ate and drank our way through the weekend. None of us were complaining. We kicked off the fun with a tasting at Rahr and Sons Brewery. For just ten dollars, you get three full-pint pours and a souvenir pint class. What a deal! It was a gorgeous day so after a quick tour of the brewery and a pour of their outstanding Texas Red brew (highly recommended for those of you who like amber beers), the three of us headed outside for some sunshine and day drinking. Good times.
After we'd had our fill of beer, we headed to the Fort Worth Food Park. My sis thought I'd dig the fare from the Cajun Tailgators truck. My mom and Taylor dove into some crawfish and I thoroughly enjoyed my gumbo and crawfish pistolette.
A couple of days later, we hit the culinary height of the trip but not before we made a quick stop at Booger Red's Saloon. My mom wanted to sit on one of their saddles and have a Rahr Buffalo Butt beer at the most appropriate place for it. Yes. This exists.
That night, we enjoyed an absolutely incredible dinner at Chef Tim Love's Lonesome Dove Western Bistro. If you are ever in Fort Worth, do yourself a huge favor and make reservations here. Order the Texas yellow squash soup and the roasted garlic beef tenderloin medallion with a Syrah demi-glace. You might want to split the beef with someone so you have room to share an ancho chile chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and almond brittle. Just a friendly suggestion.
All in all, we had a fantastic weekend. I can't wait to go back for more great beer, amazing food, and fun times with people I love.
