31 While 31--Raspberry Gelato

Oh gelato, how I adore thee.  You are so tasty and creamy and perfect.  Plus, I always get to eat you with those fun little plastic spades.  Until now.

Now, thanks to my 31 While 31 list, I have a great recipe for homemade gelato every bit as tasty and creamy as the scoops we get at my favorite gelateria.  I guess all that's missing is the fun little plastic spade.  Oh well...seems like a fair trade.

31 While 31--Raspberry Gelato
from Aunt Lena's Creamery in Chandler, AZ

12 oz. fresh raspberries
2/3 c. sugar (I used half granulated and half vanilla sugar)
2 c. whole milk
1/2 c. heavy cream
1 tsp. fresh lemon or lime juice

1.  Process berries, sugar, and whole milk in a food processor or blender until smooth.  Pour into a nonreactive bowl.

2.  Add in the heavy cream and mix just enough to combine.  (Do not whip the cream.)  Add in the lemon or lime juice.  Cover and refrigerate for at least four hours and up to overnight.

3.  Transfer the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's instructions.  Serve immediately or freeze up to one month.

***Note: The recipe author says you can substitute the following fruits using the above recipe: bananas, peaches, pears, strawberries, blackberries, apricots, Granny Smith apples, and blueberries.

Mmmmm, I will survive on gelato and pasta and everything Italian for the next two weeks. I'm saving this recipe for when I come back and want a piece of it at home. YUMMY!

Lovely photo! And just think, if you were using a plastic spade, we wouldn't get to see your reflection in the spoon. ;) (I noticed because I have a soup photo that I didn't realize until later you could see my reflection, AND I HAD ON MY PAJAMAS!)

I think I had geltao twice a day while I was in Italy. This is just another reason I need to get an ice cream maker!

Sadly, I have never had gelato. Maybe I can make it at home, and actually get to try it sometime. Thanks!

Gorgeous picture, Kelsey! And the gelato sounds perfect - I've been wanting to make raspberry ice cream, but maybe I'll make this instead :-)

I LOVE gelato. We had so much gelato on our honeymoon in Italy. This is such a gorgeous picture, brings back memories and really makes me want to finally get an ice cream maker! If only I had space!

Yum! What do you think about using frozen raspberries since fresh ones are still several months away?

Beth--I think that would be fine. I'd thaw the berries and drain the extra liquid from them before making the puree. You could keep the extra liquid, add some sugar, and boil it down for a raspberry drizzling syrup!
